Introduction

The Date Palm Research Institute is run by Dr. Ameer Ahmed Mirbahar as a Director under the visionary leadership of Prof. Dr. Khalil Ahmed Ibupoto the Vice Chancellor, Shah Abdul Latif University, Khairpur.  Dr. Mirbahar has a versatile experience in the field of Plant Biotechnology, having experience in DNA fingerprinting, Gene Cloning, Hydroponic cultivation of exotic cut flowers (Orchids, Anthurium, Phalaenopsis, and Vanda), Cherry tomato cultivation, the establishment of Greenhouses with mist irrigation, nutrient and disease management. Dr. Mirbahar did Postdoctorate from Plant Cell and Chromosome Engineering Laboratory (PCCEL), Institute of Genetics and Developmental Biology (IGBD) Beijing, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) China. Dr. Mirbahar has worked as an active team member of renowned scientists Prof. Dr. Saifullah Khan and Prof. Dr. Muhammad Iqbal Choudhary H.I., S.I., T.I., Mustafa Laurate at the Plant Biotechnology Wing, International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS), University of Karachi. Dr. Mirbahar is also conducting classes of BS, M.Phil/MS, and PhD. and supervising research scholars for MS/M.Phil and PhD degree programs in the department of Botany, Shah Abdul Latif University, Khairpur.

 

Khairpur being the area of Date Palm was given an opportunity to establish Date Palm Research Institute (DPRI) to conduct research on various aspects of date palm. The DPRI project was approved with a capital cost Rs.30.740 million by Higher Education Commission, Islamabad. The project was approved for three years and has been completed in November 2007. Since then, the institute has been shifted to the recurring budget of the University and is a part of University. The Institute is conducting research on various aspects of Date Palm as per objectives of the Project.
